Can I learn to fly?

YES!

You don’t need to be an extreme athlete to fly. Free flight is more about finesse and decision making. Students should be able to walk a mile and run a distance similar to running to first base. Being mentally alert is just as important. A successful student and pilot will be able to think clearly and enjoy the training process at their own rate.

How long does the training take?

It depends.

Each pilot is different in their initial H2 training. In a perfect weather week with an average paced student, one could complete the course in 7-10 days. Because weather, and “life” are also factors for many students, LMFP lesson package are valid for two years. While consecutive training days is always best, this policy is meant to give you ample time to schedule and complete your training at your pace.

I am interested in a Training Package! Where do I begin?

In order to get started with a training package for hang gliding and/or paragliding, we recommend that you contact our office to book directly with a Sales Associate via phone call or in person.

When you’re ready to move forward, you will be given a breakdown of all package options and a Sales Associate will help build out a schedule that works with your busy life!

All hang gliding packages are valid for (2) two years from the date of the original purchase. Unlimited paragliding training hill flights are good for (1) one year from the date of the original purchase.

Due to the nature and fine details of training, package scheduling is not fully available online, and all in-depth schedules will need to be personalized and built out for each student with an Office Sales Associate.

Full payment is required at the time of booking along with contact information stating name, email address, phone number, the weight of all students, and billing address.

How much does gear cost?

Beginner HG gear can be between $4,000 – $10,000. (depending if you buy new or used)

Free flight is the most accessible form of aviation both in training and gear investment.

A completely new, custom hang gliding equipment package can be between $6,000 – $10,000, used can be a bit less. A well taken care of hang glider can last up to 20 years. Harnesses, when treated well, will last your entire flying career.

A completely new, custom paraglider equipment package, purchased from a reliable school, can be around $5,500 – $6,500.

In either sport, a basic set up will consist of your wing, harness, parachute (or reserve for paragliding), and helmet.

LMFP prides itself on over 40 years’ experience selling the best flight gear on the market.

Is Hang gliding/Paragliding like Parasailing, Parachuting, Sky Diving?

Not quite.

Parasailing is what you do over the ocean or a large body of water while being pulled behind a boat.

Parachutes are used in Sky Diving and BASE jumping something totally different.

Hang gliding and Paragliding are aerodynamic wings that can be foot-launched from a ramp or cliff and are used to soar through the air in elongated flight. Skilled pilots can find lift and soar for hours with the “locals” like red tail haws and eagles.

How safe is hang gliding and paragliding?

Free flight safety is comparable to most other forms of general aviation.

  • You are 68.1 times more likely to be hurt in a motorcycle crash than you are taking a tandem hang gliding/paragliding lesson.
  • You are 11.36 times more likely to be hurt in a car crash than you are taking a tandem hang gliding/paragliding lesson.

Just like driving a car, free flight is as safe as you make it. Many accidents in the sport are due to complacency or lack of judgment on the pilot’s part and very rarely due to equipment malfunction. The USHPA and schools across the world help decrease the risks associated with free flight by offering thorough training based off over 40 years of experience. This is why it’s important to train properly and begin your career in hang gliding and paragliding under the guidance and supervision of a USHPA rated and trusted instructor.

Lookout Mountain Flight Park (LMFP) tandem instructors are world-class pilots with years of flying under their belt. Once the necessary experience is earned, pilots go through months of tandem training before being granted the honor of Tandem Instructor to spread the joy of free flight to all their students.

HOW DOES THE HANG GLIDING TANDEM CHECK-IN PROCESS WORK?

After your booking has been created, you can plan to arrive at our office for your check-in. This location is 7201 Scenic Highway in Rising Fawn, GA 30738.

Once here, we will check in with your party and go over waiver instructions. If you’d like to be emailed 2 of the 3 required waivers ahead of time, please email/call to request this option.*

*Please note that you will still need to arrive at the same given time and you will be required to fill out one more required waiver in person, but filling out the other forms ahead of time can speed up the process.

Please check out the section “Can I fill out waivers ahead of time for my Discovery Tandem Flight” on this FAQ Page for more information.

After waivers have been checked and any in flight videos and photos purchased, hang gliding tandem customers will be given directions to our landing zone. The landing zone is where your tandem flight will take off and land.

This will be a seven-minute drive from the mountain top to the valley and you will be taking this drive in your own vehicle.

Along with the map provided, we will instruct you on how to get to your tandem location using Google Pins.

Please be advised that Google Pin locations only work on Google Maps.

*Please note: We do not provide shuttle services.

You will be required to travel in your own vehicle. You are welcome to use an Uber or taxi service, however, the customer will be required to schedule this directly while, also, being directly responsible for time constraints. Late shuttles that affect your arrival time may force cancellation.

Once you have your map and your flight ticket, you will be on your way to our landing zone where you will park your vehicle and head over to our sign-in desk. From there, you will watch a safety video and wait in line for your turn to be put into your safety harness by one of our trained towline specialists before your exciting flight ensues!

HOW DOES THE PARAGLIDING TANDEM CHECK-IN PROCESS WORK?

After your booking has been created, you can plan to arrive at our Pro Shop for your check-in.

After waivers have been checked and any in flight videos purchased, paragliding tandem customers will meet their awesome paragliding instructor at the Pro Shop/mountain launch area for flight instructions.

Do I need to arrive in my own car?

You must have your own vehicle if you are traveling to our hills to train. Hills training is included in our larger packages for students and our Introductory Experiences.

Students meet their instructors at our Pro Shop. From there, they will follow their instructor on a short drive down to our training hills. Afterward, if the student is planning on going to our landing zone to experience a Discovery Tandem, that is another short 10-minute drive to our park.

Likewise, guests coming to experience a tandem with us will also need their own vehicle to be able to travel from the Pro Shop to the landing zone.

A map and Google Pins will be provided to help you find your way.

If you are renting a vehicle or taking a taxi/Uber and you are scheduled to train on our hills, please be advised that this will be on a bumpy, gravel road and 4WD is recommended.

Please follow all Google Pins and never drive your vehicle in any of our grass fields or take your vehicles off of any of our gravel or dirt roads.

If your GPS is instructing you to do this, you have missed a turn somewhere!

Our large, grass field is an ACTIVE landing zone where hang glider pilots, paragliding pilots, and plane pilots will be landing, and passing is not approved for anyone other than employees. Along with this, we need to keep our field smooth for landings, and any type of motor vehicle has the potential to affect the field’s condition.

Whenever necessary, office staff will be giving you any/all applicable Google Pins that are to be used directly with Google Maps to ensure that you arrive exactly where you need to be!

HOW LONG DO THE TANDEM FLIGHTS LAST AND HOW LONG DOES THE ENTIRE PROCESS TAKE?

The time in the air varies depending on weather conditions and the amount of light aerobatics performed during the flight.

A 1500’ hang gliding tandem flight averages 8 – 12 minutes in the air.

A 3000’ hang gliding tandem flight averages 15-20 minutes in the air.

Paragliding mountain tandems average 8-12 minutes.

The entire experience from check-in (filling out your paperwork) to the time you leave (finish your flight) will be approximately two hours.

Please Note: Inclement weather could cause delays and make the process longer.

We appreciate your flexibility when coming to enjoy a technical sport with our expert, advanced instructors– after all, you are flying in the sky!

How many people can be in the gliders?

Two. One pilot and one passenger.

Solo hang gliders are rated to fly one pilot. Tandem hang gliders are rated to fly two pilots. One must be a tandem instructor, the other will be you!

Do you sell PHOTOS and VIDEOS?

Yes!

  • We offer in-flight videos of your paragliding tandem, and we offer both in-flight photos and/or in-flight videos of your hang gliding tandem.
  • Paragliding In-Flight Videos
  • In-flight videos of your paragliding tandem are a must have! Your mountain launch, soaring, and landing are captured by GoPro and are uploaded to your phone at the end of your flight.
  • In-flight videos are $50 and payments of cash or Venmo are accepted by your pilot.
  • Hang gliding In-Flight Photos and Videos
  • In-flight photos are $29. You will, typically, receive 60-70 still shots taken every 10 seconds of your flight– remember to smile! You will receive your SD Card full of exciting photos as soon as you land on your tandem flight the same day!

Please Note: It is normal for some of your photos to be blurry as you will be in the middle of turning in the glider with your instructor throughout the flight.

  • Videos are $55.  We edit this video and include your best highlights of the flight set to music. A YouTube link of your videos is emailed to you 10-14 business days after your flight. Please note that during our summer and fall seasons you can expect maximum wait time on your videos.
  • You can enjoy your video on YouTube. You can opt to receive a public link for anyone to see, or a private link for only your family and close friends to enjoy.
  • We do have an option for you to choose raw video footage of your flight. This is a request only. You may request this option during your original payment and you will sign an agreement to complete your purchase. We reserve the right to deny your request. If your request is denied, you will be provided with our standard edit.

Please Note:

We cannot accommodate downloads of your video to any other outlet other than YouTube. Should you wish to download your video to another outlet, you can do so with simple downloading software which can be found online.

If you’re unsure how to download your video from YouTube, please use one of the following options:  https://www.wikihow.com/Download-YouTube-Videos

In order to download the video, your video must be listed as “public.” Please contact our office should you wish to change an unlisted video to the public.

  • Hang Gliding Bundle Package: Photo and Video together for $74

Photo and video packages can be purchased via phone call during your initial purchase, or directly in our office during your tandem check-in.

Can I bring my own Go-Pro/camera?

No.

We do not allow students and customers to bring devices on the flight for multiple safety reasons. All tandem gliders are equipped with tested and approved mounted cameras. Photo/ video capture can be purchased upon check-in.

What should I wear for my flight?

Generally dress for the day’s weather and in layers.

The temperature during your flight will feel like you are driving with the windows down on the interstate, so dress appropriately for the day’s temperature.

  • We recommend athletic clothing that is comfortable
  • We do not recommend short shorts, skirts or dresses. This is for your overall comfort in your harness. Your harness has leg loops that will fit around your mid to upper thigh.
  • Any type of pants, jeans, and slacks are permitted.
  •
  • If you are someone who wears glasses, you will need to make sure that they are secure on your face. If you can look straight at the ground and shake your head from left to right without them falling, they should be secure.
  • We recommend wearing secure-fitting sunglasses, but we also safety glasses available for you to use.
  • During the winter months, we recommend layers to keep you warm. Please do not wear bulky items that will cause your harness to fit improperly.
  • Gloves are permitted should you wish to use them, but they will need to be thin in order for you to adequately hold your tandem pilot’s straps.

Footware

    • Because you are walking and running during your paragliding tandem, wear athletic shoes that will stay on your feet.
    • During your hang gliding tandem, wear shoes that will stay on your feet (must have backs).  Sandals are permitted as long as they have secure backs to ensure that you do not lose them in flight.

If I have a disability can I still go on a hang gliding tandem?

We are happy to say that we are able to accommodate most disabilities/illnesses for a hang gliding tandem flight.

Please give our office a call to discuss your limitations, and we will determine if you are eligible to take a flight with us.

    What is your refund policy?

We clearly and regularly state before, during, and after scheduling our refund policy if your flight is canceled due to poor/inclement weather or weather that we, as a technical flying sport outfitter in operation since 1978, deem outside of our safety margin.

If we cancel your flight due to less than viable flying conditions, you have agreed to receive an 85% refund (only within 30 days of the purchase) OR you have agreed to validate your ticket for two years to return at a later date.

We do not allow purchases to be made without prior agreement.

Please understand our simple policies and that this includes you before, during, and after purchasing.

PLEASE BE ADVISED OF THE FOLLOWING:

Should you wish to be informed of our policies or waive receiving this full information by not contacting us to go over these full, extended details, once you have completed your purchase with us and we have processed your payment, this will begin your contractual agreement with us.

We reserve the right, at our discretion, to change, modify, amend, add, or remove portions of our policies at any given time. You agree to this once you have made your purchase with us.

Questions or comments regarding these Terms of Use should be sent by email to fly@flylookout.com and addressed directly to an acting manager.

    OUR INFORMATION

We are a family-owned business as well as a completely weather-dependent sport!

Because of these reasons, we do not offer a typical refund policy.

Another way to think of our activity: In the very same way as a commercial airline flight being canceled due to inclement weather, causing delays, potential cancelations, or a complete change of plan that will not be eligible for a typical (if any) refund policy, we, too, experience a very similar atmosphere and policy with our free-flight sport.

We follow all applicable rules and regulations outlined by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) for our sport.

Please allow our pilots to follow all outlined and required safety guidelines.

INFORMATION TO KEEP IN MIND BEFORE BOOKING

Weather is ever-changing and cannot ever be 100% calculable. Please be mindful of this when partaking in any form of free-flight activity.

Safety is our number one priority here at Lookout Mountain Flight Park, and we ask that you be continuously mindful of this before your purchase.

    FULL REFUND POLICY

Should you be unable to fly due to inclement weather or due to any personal reasons subject to our discretion and including but not limited to: travel constraints, inconvenience, and COVID-19, all policies stated to you will stand unless directly stated otherwise.

OPTION 1: When you purchase directly with us, your ticket will be valid for TWO years from the date of purchase.

    Please be advised:

Certain conditions are required for the safety of our passengers and pilots, so we do experience cancellations due to various inclement weather conditions.

We do not make cancellations lightly, but we will cancel due to safety concerns.

We will place all flights on hold while conditions are accessed further in order to make the safest final call while we work diligently to make your flight happen.

When cancellations are required, we will contact you with as much notice as possible in order to accommodate you. Please be mindful that we may not receive the most updated information until after your arrival due to the weather constantly changing. We promise that your flexibility will be worth it when you experience this magical form of free-flight!

OPTION 2: Should you choose not to come back and fly with us within your two-year window, we do offer an 85% refund (only within 30 DAYS of your original purchase.)

Please note: The 15% that is held goes directly toward covering all credit card fees and any other applicable fees lost associated directly with supporting the viability of our family-owned business as well as our beloved and hard-working staff members who work diligently to give our customers the best, most current information each and every day to the best of their ability.

Tickets are also fully transferrable which means: No matter whose name is on the ticket you can gift them or sell them yourself; if you wish to do so or you are unable to use the ticket yourself.

All transfers will need to be handled by the owner of the original ticket and will require a phone call to our office in order to change the name of the participant.

We will not participate in helping you sell your ticket, and all personal transactions will need to be made through the original ticket holder and the new purchaser.

    WEBSITE TERMS OF USE:

All of these required policies and procedures will be fully mentioned and outlined to you at the time of purchase in-person and with over-the-phone purchases.

Should you choose to purchase directly through our website, you will, also, be advised of these policies in our agreement portion of checkout which must be “marked as read” in order to proceed. If you choose to purchase online, the short version of our policy will be displayed a total of (3) times on the final check-out page.

If you are paying to book for someone other than yourself: All policies will still apply for the said party partaking in the activity once you have agreed to the terms of service for them. As the purchaser, you have agreed to the Terms of Service directly associated with the booking and all terms will stand for the passenger/guest who is scheduled to fly with us.

If someone who is not flying purchases for you: All terms and policies will apply to each individual that is flying with us or has paid with us once the purchaser has acknowledged the agreement for you.

If you do not agree to the terms through our online booking system, you will be unable to process your payment online through our booking software until you have clicked that you agree.

From this point, after your purchase, you will void your option for a standard, full refund under this policy.

We are not responsible for any person(s) using any of our services or making a purchase in a way that breaks the law or any person(s) who misconstrues the final Terms of Service and Agreement that has been outlined to them.

    WEIGHT LIMIT AND OUR POLICY

Due to equipment restrictions, we have a strict weight limit of 250 pounds.

We will not fly anyone who is over the weight limit of 250 pounds.

On the day of your flight, if you are close to our safety cut-off range, we will require a weight assessment during the check-in portion of your scheduled flight.

Should you be over our weight limit, we will be unable to fly with you at this time.

    This policy will not change.

There are no exceptions to our safety rules.

Trying to persuade a staff member or pilot to break these safety rules will result in the breaking of this contract and will permanently place you on our Restricted Flyers List; voiding you from flying with us, indefinitely, and we will reserve the right to void any type of refund that may be issued.

Please understand: If you are over our weight limit you put our pilots and yourself at great risk.

If you are over our weight limit of 250lbs, all above, standard policies will apply to you with the following exception:

When you come for your first scheduled flight: If you are over our weight limit, we know this can be a disappointing experience. Because of this, we will offer you a one-time refund if you are physically unable to fly with us due to weight or health issues and you believe, to the best of your ability, that you will never be able to complete your flight.

We will encourage you to reschedule and opt for our (2) year policy if you believe, to the best of your ability, that you are able to return at a later date and fly with us when weight limit requirements can be met.

This full refund will be offered to you one time. This option will only be offered to you if you are over the weight limit and it is your very first time meeting with us for your flight.

If you are not over the weight limit on the first date of your flight, this policy does not apply to you.

If you are offered this option:

You will only be offered (1) time on the first date of your first scheduled flight.

If you choose to opt for the 2-year policy instead of the full refund policy, this will then void your ability to receive a full refund— permanently. You will only be eligible for the standard policy of an 85% refund within the first 30 days of the purchase.

If you return to a second scheduled date of your flight, and you are still over the weight limit OR if you wish to receive the full refund at this point, you will not be eligible for a full refund as it is only available on your first date of the originally scheduled flight.

If you are purchasing for someone who is over the weight limit, the (1) time refund weight policy will still stand for the participant in question.

We keep all information and weights on file and will notate any refunds offered and accepted.

Because it needs to be said: If you are not over our weight limit and you gain weight in order to go over our weight limit, this will not qualify you for a full refund and any negligence of this policy on the customer’s part may lead to the customer being placed on our Restricted Flyers List.

We reserve the right to void this weight limit policy if it is not directly offered to you or if it is violated, taken advantage of, or misconstrued by anyone in the party.

We reserve the right to void or change any and all policies and terms if it is not directly offered to you or if it is violated, taken advantage of, or misconstrued by anyone in the party.

We cannot be held responsible or liable if any or all Policies or Terms and Conditions are not read or listened to during the initial purchase period or the purchaser has failed to consult the party member flying about the Policies or Terms and Conditions.

Gliders and glider equipment must be purchased by an USHPA rated pilot. Failure to do so will result in the order being returned. We have the right to refuse any purchase or product at any time, whether this is expressly stated to you or not. For gliders and equipment, it is recommended to ask for details regarding the product before you purchase. If you make a purchase with us, we have the right to refuse or cancel your purchase through any means necessary and for any reason and this reason does not have to be expressly stated to you.

The company of Airspace, INC., DBA Lookout Mountain Flight Park can cancel orders and refund customers’ money because of pricing errors (or for any reason) that may or may not be expressly stated to you.

What happens if we can't fly due to weather?

We will have to reschedule your flight to another day.

We constantly monitor weather, however, the most accurate forecast will be determined within 12-24hrs of the flying day. Should the weather keep us from flying, we will do our best to inform you of any updates at least 12 hours in advance of your flight time. We are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and cannot contact you during these days. All flights are valid for up to two years, fully transferrable, and can be rescheduled with no additional fees.

Information to keep in mind: Certain weather conditions are required for hang gliding and paragliding, and safety is our top priority. Even on a beautiful, sunny day the wind conditions can prevent us from flying.

    – Weather is weather which means it can change and be unpredictable, thus, we like to wait closer to your flight time to give you the most accurate update.

    – Please be mindful that you are booking for a completely weather-dependent, technical flying sport.

You will never hear our staff give you a 100% chance of flying as this is not possible for any flying sport. We love to tell students that weather is looking decent or viable or even good at the moment they are asking about– but this does not have a correlation of 100% chance of flight.

    We appreciate your understanding!

Why Only an 85% Refund If I Can't Fly Due to Weather?

When you join us for your thrilling experience you are booking an experience for a technical and weather-dependent flying sport. We, also, kindly ask that you remember when you purchase with us you are supporting family-owned, small businesses, AND local!

This 15% processing fee that we keep for all refunded bookings will go directly toward credit card fees incurred by all small and large businesses, alike, and, more importantly, this 15% will go toward taking care of our beloved staff members who are still working hard behind the scenes– even when flights are canceled due to inclement weather outside of our safety margins.

We are always happy to discuss extensions of our two-year policy on your flight tickets and give you even more time to come back and enjoy the experience with us.

We clearly and regularly state before, during, and after scheduling that if your flight is canceled due to poor/inclement weather or weather that we, as a technical flying sport outfitter in operation since 1978, deem outside of our safety margin– this still includes you in our outlined 85% refund.

If we cancel your flight due to less than viable flying conditions, you have agreed to receive an 85% refund within (30) days of the purchase OR you have agreed to validate your ticket for (2) years to return at a later date.

We do not allow purchases to be made without prior agreement.

Please understand our simple policies and that this includes you before, during, and after purchasing.

    Is there an age/weight limit?

Yes. The age minimum for tandem flights is 10 years old. Training hill students must be at least 12 years of age and weigh at least 100lbs. All students under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian to help fill out waivers.

The weight limit for tandem flights and training hills is 250lbs.

Students between 230lbs and 250lbs will require smoother conditions to fly.

Please be advised that all guests will be weighed.

We do not fly tandem flights with anyone who weighs over 250lbs due to safety reasons.

Students over 250lbs interested in learning to fly, please give us a call to go over your options!

Do you need a license to fly?

As a tandem student, no! Upon check-in you will receive a temporary membership to the USHPA which grants you the ability to fly! As a solo pilot, you must have a USHPA pilot rating.

What can I find nearby in terms of other accommodations and restaurants?

    Lot of options!

Lookout Mountain Flight Park offers a wide range of accomodations from camping, rv hookups, bunk house lodgings, and private cabins ranging in size to meet your needs.

We are 30 minutes from downtown Chattanooga.

You can also find other hotels, stores, and restaurants in Trenton, GA located approximately 10-15 minutes from the park and in Tiftonia which is about a 20-25 minute drive.

There are also several ecclectic restaurants located minutes down the road from our Pro Shop in Rising Fawn, Georgia that we highly recommend!

Can I fill out waivers ahead of time for my Discovery Tandem Flight?

    Yes!*

*You can fill out 3 out of the 4 required documents ahead of time!

Please note: This is only for guests who booked a one-time Discovery Tandem Flight to either 1500 Feet or 3000 Feet.

All other larger packages will have paperwork set up and prepared for you at your more detailed check-in process.

Ask us about our electronically sent waivers if you’d like to get most of your paperwork done ahead of time or if you have a group booking to help us further avoid over-crowding! Please note the following: This option will allow us to send you (3) of the (4) required documents to you via email. You will then be able to print out these documents and sign them/scan them back to us BEFORE your flight OR you will be able to print them out and bring them to our office on the DAY OF your flight. Your last document will require you to fill it out in person due to its nature. Because of this, you will still need to arrive at our office at your scheduled arrival time 45 minutes ahead of your flight in order to ensure all paperwork is in order.

I have a motor and want to land/launch at your facilities. Can I do that?

    Unfortunately, no.

    Per Lookout Mountain Flight Park:

We do not allow the use of motors on our property due to a long-standing Noise Ordinance Agreement that we have set into place with the surrounding residences near our park.

Apart from our authorized tug planes that perform tandems, we do not allow any motorized aircraft to land or take off from any of our park’s land including, but not limited to, our main landing zone, our mountain launch, or our training hills.

Who can I contact with further questions?

    Phone: 706-383-1292

How do I reschedule my flight if I booked directly online or over the phone?

If you are setting up a new appointment with us, we are happy to offer online scheduling right here on our website for customers who prefer to book this way and pay directly online.

However, we do not offer an option at this time for customers to reschedule themselves, directly.

Due to the nature of our technical flying sport, you will need to contact our office directly to reschedule or make any changes to your reservation.

This means that you cannot reschedule your flight on our website. If you try to do so, it will require another payment method and you will be charged for an additional flight/package.

If you’d like to reschedule your flight after booking directly with us online or via phone call, please either give our office a call at 706-383-1292 or email us at fly@flylookout.com.

The fastest way to reach us is currently by phone call. We appreciate your patience when calling in or emailing to reschedule!

You can provide your name or booking number in order for staff to pull up your reservation for a rebooking. Please have a date in mind and information on whether you would prefer a morning or afternoon flight time.

    Note:

    • You can use our online booking/scheduling page as a guide to see what availabilities we may have before you call to reschedule your original flight(s)/package(s). Just please keep in mind that these numbers can change within seconds/minutes if another guest books the time slot you are looking at, and remember: Do not input your payment at the end unless you’d like to purchase additional flights!
    • If you need to reschedule your flight but don’t have a date in mind just yet, this is perfectly fine! You can contact our office to cancel your booking and simply reach back out to us when you have a new date in mind.
