Manufactured and distributed by Lookout Mountain Flight Park. We feel that the GT XC harness is the best all around, easy to use pod style harness available. This harness is the result of many years of harness development. The result is a comfortable, easy to fly, easy to land harness that is very clean aerodynamically while still offering a lot of storage. The GT XC is built with the finest materials.
STRUCTURE/MATERIALS
The GT XC was designed to be easy to use, easy to preflight, and easy to maintain while keeping the harness comfortable with lots of storage space. The harness mains are made with 6,000 lb test webbing. This harness features a continuous webbing design with webbing connecting the shoulders and leg loops to the waist buckles thereby forming a continuous webbing system. The body of the GT XC is composed of 1/4” high-density closed cell foam between 400-Denier pack-cloth. The provided steel carabineer is rated to approximately 6000 kilos.
STORAGE
There are two large storage zipper compartments, one smaller zipper compartment, a hook knife pocket, and a radio pocket on the GT XC harness. The large zipper pocket on the outside of the back of the harness runs ¾ of the length of the entire body. This pocket is built to expand and is big enough to hold glider bags, extra clothing, or any other larger item you fly with. There is also a zipper compartment running the length of the inside of the harness. This pocket is also ideal for holding glider bags or larger items you fly with depending on how thick your glider bag is and how tight your harness is to your body.Be careful to not over pack either of these pockets.Over packing can affect the fit of your harness or make it difficult to get your feet in and out of the boot of the harness. Be aware that overloading the zippers can damage the zippers.
On the front of the parachute pouch, there is a smaller zipper pouch that is designed to carry smaller items such as your cell phone or small snacks (Figure 1).This pocket is accessible during flight. Avoid packing large or heavy items in the pocket as it could be easy to drop items from this pocket during flight. Avoid packing anything in this pocket that could obstruct the parachute handle.
Also located on the parachute pouch is the hook knife pocket (Figure 1).Situated right on your chest, the hook knife pocket is easily accessible during flight. There is also a snap on the pocket that corresponds with the snap on your hook knife. Please use it.Using bungee cord, connect your hook knife to your harness through the available grommet, this will allow you to retrieve your hook knife in the event that you drop it.
ADJUSTMENTS
There are several ways to adjust the fit of your harness. They include the shoulder straps, leg loops, your body positioning line, and your head up/head down or pitch. When making adjustments to your harness, always check with your instructor or dealer to insure the best fit and proper adjustment.
IN FLIGHT
The GT XC was designed to be a harness that is flyable at all skill levels. Many new pilots have chosen the GT XC as their first harness and have had excellent results. As a new pilot, discuss with your instructor or dealer about what to expect when flying a pod harness.
Keep in mind that it is easy to cross control with a harness that holds you in a prone position compared to an upright, training type harness. If you are experiencing control problems while flying your harness for the first time you may want to go to an upright landing position and fly your harness more like a training type harness. Avoid doing more than one new thing at a time and fly in smooth conditions when first flying with new equipment.
Before flying your GT XC, hang in your new harness to ensure that you have the correct clearance, that your leg loops are the correct length, and that your head up line is set correctly. The closer you are to the base tube when flying prone, the more control authority you will have in flight. You also need to be high enough that you have good flare authority when landing. Also ensure that you are high enough that your parachute pouch clears your base tube.Generally one to two fists above the base tube is a good rule of thumb.
SAFETY
The harness is standard with a front mounted parachute pocket.Flying with a parachute is recommended. An added benefit of a front mounted chute is that it can provide chest protection in the event of a crash.
PUTTING ON YOUR HARNESS
It goes on like a jacket.
- Thoroughly preflight your harness!
- Step into your leg loops. Make sure your clothing is appropriate for flying and will not jam the boot zipper.
- Put the harness on like a jacket
- Zip the main zipper to where the loop on the zipper head will fit around the quick lock buckle. The zipper will be positioned below the buckle.
- Connect the two quick lock buckles.
- Zip the parachute pouch.
- Connect the buckle on the parachute pouch zipper to the buckle on the harness body.
- Include your harness in your preflight!
MAINTENANCE
With proper care, you will enjoy years of flying in your GT XC harness. The main cause of degradation is UV.Basically, keep your harness out of the sun as much as possible! You should also not store your harness in hot places like the back of your car (especially in the summer).
All rope and line will need to be replaced as needed. Look for the first signs of fraying lines or rope. Zippers should be lubricated with food grade silicone lubricant. If you apply too much silicone spray, the zipper will attract dirt and this can wear the zipper out. When the zipper gets damaged or is difficult to use replace.
Some other tips are the following.Store your harness in your harness bag.If you need to clean your harness, wash it by hand with a gentle water based cleanser.Don’t use harsh chemicals! If your harness gets wet, open it as much as possible to air dry. This will help prevent the growth of mildew and prevent metal corrosion.Do not put your harness in the dryer!
GT Manufacturing recommends that your harness undergoes a yearly inspection by your instructor, dealer or by GT Manufacturing itself.
Fly safe and fly often! Please enjoy flying your new GT XC harness.Remember that aviation is dangerous and that you fly at your own risk.Fly equipment that is at your skill level and in conditions that are in your skill level. If you have any questions about materials covered in this manual please contact your dealer or Lookout Mountain Flight Park Inc.
